Stun Gun Laws by State: What You Need to Know Before You Buy
Stun gun legality varies by state and sometimes by city. Here’s what to check before you buy and carry a personal defense stun gun.

Personal defense stun guns are legal for civilian ownership in the majority of U.S. states, but restrictions vary widely — some states regulate age, some regulate voltage, and a small number restrict or prohibit civilian ownership entirely.
Before purchasing, confirm three things: whether stun guns are legal to own in your state, whether a permit or age minimum applies, and whether your specific city or county adds additional restrictions on top of state law.
Even where stun guns are broadly legal, certain locations — schools, courthouses, airports, and some private venues — commonly prohibit them regardless of state law. Always check posted policies before bringing a device into a restricted location.
Shipping restrictions can also differ from possession restrictions. Cheetah Stun Gun cannot ship to addresses in jurisdictions where stun gun ownership is restricted or prohibited — see our Legal & Shipping Restrictions page for the current list.
When in doubt, check your state attorney general’s office or local law enforcement non-emergency line for the most current guidance. Laws change, and it’s always your responsibility as the buyer to confirm local legality before ordering.
